Annotated ‘Aug 1816 Stellenbosch’ in pencil on reverse, possibly originally annotated on front bottom. Seal cut off leaving hole, otherwise in fine condition.

Circa 1818. ‘In Dienst’ (On Service) Wrapper apparently uncharged and posted free from STELLENBOSCH to Cape Town where it was received with a fine legible strike of the GPO Crown-In-Circle (CiC) handstamp. Posted by the Landrost (Magistrate) of Stellenbosch to his superior in Cape Town, the Receiver of Taxes. Early-ish use of the GPO Cape Town CiC handstamp. Wax stain on reverse. Good condition.

Circa 1830. Wrapper undated. CALEDON to CAPE TOWN. Wrapper annotated 1818 in pencil top left. Wrapper paper watermarked ‘I S 1830’ suggesting late-ish Crown-In-Circle (CiC) use. Dispatched Caledon with CiC handstamp (1818) in black ink. Received Cape Town with CiC (1817) in black ink. Wax stain and hinge remnants on reverse. A good example with two strikes of late CiC use.

Red ms ‘paid 7d’. Received a useful ‘POST PAID’ rectangular boxed handstamp in black ink in Cape Town. Impression and stain of red wax seal on reverse. Good. clean condition.

1883 – 1893. Ten years of correct postal use of the Bredasdorp Small Triangular Obliterator in conjunction with the Single Circle datestamp. Cape Town SC receiving marks on reverse. The 1893 cover is torn and worn but otherwise all are fine and clean with clear postmarks. All three covers contain original contents. The 1895 cover has a nice wax seal of the Steyn family.

Meets description in Mathews / van Zeyl’s ‘Transvaal Philately’ – 1. white envelope, 2. size 143 x 77mm, 3. gummed flap with ornament, 4. clearly visible alterations from ‘DRIE’ to ‘ZES’. Forgeries exist but this is similar to the Alan Drysdale example in ‘Transvaal Philately and quite unlike the two shades for sale on BobShop for R3500. Your money back if you can show it this is not genuine!

The sender’s address is ‘Bakovenspan, (Afr. Baking Oven’s Pan), presumably a reference to the heat. Sent from ‘PO Orange River Station’.
