Lot 33
Griquatown. 1818. Pre-adhesive four page letter from London to the Rev. William Anderson, founder of the Klaarwater Mission Station north of the Orange River in 1801. Anderson and his wife lived with the Griqua people until early 1820. This letter is addressed to Klaarwater after it became Griquatown in 1813. One page is shown here.
UNSOLD
This is a rare item of Africana that deserves proper academic reseach. Little is known about the letter itself. It has been claimed that it is “the first letter delivered across the Orange River”. This is unlikely but where are earlier examples? It is more likely that this is the earliest surviving example of missionary mail from London to Griqualand. (A similar example is said to be in an Australian museum.) It has also been claimed that this letter was carried and delivered to Anderson by Dr John Campbell of the LMS. Anderson lived outside of the Cape Colony border but did have infrequent contact with the outside world. In 1814, before this letter was written, he fell into disfavour with Cape colonial officialdom who regarded him as an outpost of Empire who was expected to do as told. He was berated (presumably by letter) for supporting the rights of the ‘free’ Griqua who lived beyond the Cape’s borders and Britain’s jusrisdiction. There is some staining and wear which is to be expected of a fragile item that journeyed into the hinterland of southern Africa 15 years before the Great Trek. It is also claimed to have been in Sir Maxwell Joseph’s collection but there is no proof of that yet. Despite all the gaps in its history and provenance, no Griqualand collection is complete without this classic item from the dawn of trans-Orange postal history.

Many complete issues, a few unmounted mint, 12 missing stamps and eight used. Among the complete sets are the 1933 Zeppelin issue and 1934 International Arts and more. Colour superb. Condition excellent. eBay asks crazy prices for some of these sets, like £149 – £200+ for just the 1934 Cirenaica Rome-Mogadishu set of 10 values. Judged by eBay prices, this lot is worth over £1,000! In the 1990s the Euro cat value was €560. This is a great lot for anyone selling on eBay and a better buy for the cost-conscious collector. The Bridge, which took just 14 months to build, was opened on 12th September 1905. This print presumably predates any photographic record of the completed bridge.
