1927 (18 February) First Pictorial Postal Card issue when they were introduced by the South African Post Office. Photographs were by the Publicity Department of South African Railways and they were issued to promote South Africa, encourage tourism and increase awareness of South African topographical scenery. The set consists of 24 different cards. The lot has 18 different cards of which two are unused and 16 postally used, most of them addressed to ‘Miss Anne Lightfoot’ in Surrey, England. Missing cards are numbers 6, 8, 10, 12, 15 and 23. Well written up and in fine condition making a superb lot of 18 sheets. Not often seen.

1927 (November) Series of 24 Pictorial Postal Cards issued for inland/domestic usage. Views of the previous issue were used but the imprinted stamp was changed to a ½d Springbok with a space to the left for additional stamps. Each of the cards are numbered. Twenty one cards in total, with card 9, 13 and 24 duplicated. Six missing cards 2, 5, 6, 10, 18 and 22. Fourteen unused and seven used. All in fine condition.

1934 Domestic rate was reduced to ½d and a new set of 24 Pictorial Postal Cards was produced based on a previous set of 36 cards. In 1935 the International Post Card rate was reduced from 1d to 1½d. Unsold cards were returned to the Government Printing Office where the space next to the imprinted stamp had a ½d springbok affixed for reuse. The cards were also numbered. Lot includes card numbers 2, 4, 5, 10, 15, 16, 17, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35 and 36. Numbers used were not sequential. Four used. Nineteen of 24 on 22 sheets.
