What’s inside The Springbok – April 2024

This is another bumper issue of The Springbok containing an extensive ‘Report on Auction of John Shaw’s Collection‘ by Tony Howgrave-Graham, our Chairman. Items from the late John Shaw’s collection came up for sale at a recent Grosvenor auction. John Shaw MBE was an ex-RAF Vulcan pilot and Squadron Leader, a much-liked past President of SACS with a good line in mess hall humour. John and Tony often competed against each other in auction for top-quality items. Tony’s article makes interesting if worrying reading about the state of the market for ‘high end’ philately today.

“John Shaw had a love affair with the Harrison essays ever since he’d found a dealer with a suitcase full when he was a young man.”

Other articles include an airmail ‘Mystery in Egypt’ by Nick Arrow’; RSA articles from Roy Ross, ‘Exploring Nature through Philately’, Keith Klugman, ‘VIP Official FDCs commemorating Presidents’, and the final part of Keith Perrow’s ‘7th Definitive Flowers’. Rob and Lyn Lester’s contributions are twofold, ‘Union Cinderellas’ and ‘SA Post Offices’. Bob Hill, ‘Cape Postcards and Postmarks’ and Tony Howgrave-Grahams’ ‘SWA Corner’ bring up the rear. The article on ‘Curating Private Postal Wrappers’ by Dr John Coutis FRPSL is unusual in that he is not a SACS member. This has not deterred our members from assisting his studies with two unrecorded examples, one of which is shown below. Hopefully we will see these in the next issue of The Springbok.

The newly recorded Diamond Fields Adveriser wrapper as used in December 1893.
