SACS Letchworth Meeting
13th April 2024
This Letchworth meeting organised by Bob Hill and Rob and Lyn Lester was a great success, the best attended meeting for several years. There was some superb material on display, most notably Ian Shapiro’s 5 frames from the life of the artist Thomas Bowler while he was living on Robben Island at the Cape in the late 1830s. Ian also showed a stunningly detailed (possibly A1 size) framed etching of Cape Town made in 1849. We were also privileged to see the Lesters’ display of 19th c. Cape exhibition material which included a genuinely unique item from the 1892 Kimberley Exhibtion, as well programmes and medals. Wide-ranging displays from Bob Hill (Table Mountain), Steve Hannath (6 frames of South African War material based around a letter from the Mount Nelson Hotel), Keith Perrow (2010 Beadwork 8th Definitive Series) and Chris Oliver (postal stationery & Registered Letter covers) added to our edification and delight.
- Simon Peetoom was in attendance as a dealer. Rob Lester purchased a ZAR postcard from 1896 which when studied excited several other members. It suggests a reason for the cancellation of a planned exhibition. Besides sharing knowledge, meetings can also be about discovery and acquisition!
A New Fun Competition open to All
A new competition called ‘1-2-3’ was introduced at the Letchworth meeting.
Bob and the Lesters have made SACS’ bi-annual Letchworth meeting an enjoyable, informal occasion, one well-worth visiting for the quality of its displays and the company of like-minded South Africa collectors. (Next meeting Saturday 28th September 2024.)
1-2-3’s aim is to encourage everyone, especially newcomers, to have fun showing something, anything, on one, two or three pages with the often awkward time of talking about it limited to one minute per sheet. Our first winner was Annemarie Verwoerd with two pages on the Kruger Park. Rob Lester generously donated a ‘1-2-3’ silver cup which is now engraved with Annemarie’s name. Her Hermanus holiday T-shirt proclaiming ‘My favourite animal is Tjops’ was also worthy of an award.
