What’s inside The Springbok – April 2026

April’s Springbok is again a 36-page edition with a wide range of articles, features and images. It also contains information on upcoming Society events and includes the agenda for the 2026 AGM to be held at Kenilworth, along with the annual reports from the Chairman and Secretary.

The magazine starts with a detailed report, by Bob Hill on the one-day meeting held in Letchworth at the Elizabeth Howard Memorial Hall on 11 April 2026 which describes the displays that day and the award of the Letchworth 1-2-3 cup to Tony Johnson. Tony Howgrave-Graham provides an auction report on a recent Spink sale from December 2025, which is illustrated with examples of some of the material sold. He continues his SWA corner with a selection of fine covers and post cards.

This is followed with the Agenda for the AGM which is to be held in Kenilworth at the Society’s weekend meeting, organised by Simon Peetoom, along with the Chairman’s and the Secretary’s annual reports. A programme for the Kenilworth meeting, and information about the hotel completes this section.

Lyn & Rob Lester continue their Union Cinderella articles with five different events described by commercial labels from the latter part of the Union period, as well as further early post cards of South African Post Offices.

Steve Hannath writes on Gilbert James Allis, the first RDPSA in South Africa. The article is well illustrated with images of stamps and post cards adding to its interest.

An update of an article ‘On the Centenary of the London Printings of the Union Definitive – Use on the First Day of Issue, January 1st, 1926’ produced initially by Keith Klugman and published in the South African Philatelist in February 2026 is then featured. Hendrick Geyer joins Keith as a co-author for the update, which includes an array of illustrated covers and an analysis of all recorded covers to date.

There are details about the SACS Two-Day Open meeting at the Letchworth Hall Hotel on 7 & 8 November 2026. Tim Harrison requests help from members in identifying South African and South West African machine cancels from the 1980’s.
