What’s inside The Springbok – July 2026

July’s Springbok has 36-pages of features, images and articles including reports on meetings, Union Revenues, a feature on interesting RSA items, a spectacular insight into satirical hand illustrated covers from the Boer War, Union Cinderella, and South West Africa corner. Society matters also feature with the minutes of the AGM held on 31 May 2026.

The magazine starts with a reminder for all members that the two-day open conference in November is to be held at the Letchworth Hall Hotel on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November.

Bob Hill’s report on the Kenilworth weekend meeting on 31 May and 1 June, describes all of the main displays on the Sunday as well as members displays on the Monday. Steve Hannath is photographed winning the Abel Trophy.

This is followed by the AGM minutes and a selection of Interesting RSA items prepared by Keith Perrow. Tony Howgrave-Graham completes his five-part series on Union revenues including illustrations of high value usage on cover.

Nick Harris takes us through a number of satirical printed covers by Sergeant Alfred Lyons, a South African cartoonist and soldier who served in the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902. The hand drawn illustrations are very well described and most comical.

Lyn & Rob Lester continue with the 20th part of their ‘commercial’ Union Cinderella articles featuring a further 5 labels that are rarely seen, with three of them relating to the referendum held on 5 October 1960 after which South Africa became a Republic.

Tony Howgrave-Graham continues with his South West Corner articles, this time with a special personal tribute to Colin Faers, whom he met locally in Salisbury. Finally, the Philatelic Federation of South Africa requests all members help in a survey of collecting interests
