What’s inside The Springbok – January 2026
January’s Springbok is a 36-page edition full of varied articles and images but also records the sad news of the passing of Chris Oliver, the Society’s secretary for many years. An obituary for Chris is included.
The magazine starts with a detailed report, by Bob Hill on the two-day open meeting held at Letchworth Hall Hotel in November 2025 and describes the five main displays on the Saturday as well as the members displays on the Sunday.
Tony Howgrave Graham reports on the success of auction 64 ‘The Sherwood Sale’, where 85% of the lots were sold. Prices realised are included. A thank you from the Sherwood family adds a personal touch. Membership subscriptions for 2026 are shown and were due on 1 January. Please make sure you have paid.
Steve Hannath writes on The Dorsland Trekkers following his display at the November meeting in Letchworth, with many images and a most interesting article.
Part 4 of Tony Howgrave-Graham’s Revenue article relates to the 1938 to 1942 third Union series with many photographs and a detailed write up. He also includes a further fascinating article in his South West Africa Corner entitled ‘Protectorate or Mandated Territory’.
Rob & Lyn Lester continue their Union Cinderella articles with a single commercial label featuring the 1924 British Empire Exhibition, as well as further early post cards of South African Post Offices.
Dannie van Zyl describes the ‘Mandela Autopen’ signatures, with images and a highly detailed account and checklist.
A notice about the SACS Summer meeting in Kenilworth, 31 May to 1 June give details of the event organised by Simon Peetoom.
