The Springbok Archive 1950s
“And nobody will tell us that the collector is not suffering when we see the latest efforts in commemoratives. We think the Kruger pair are bad enough and in fact we just cannot understand how two national forefathers can be permitted to appear on stamps honouring them, looking for all the world like a couple of undertakers! And the Covenant stamp depicts Andries Pretorious, hero of the Blood River Battle, like a double-eyed villain of the old time stage. The colour – shocking pink to virulent blue as it has been described to us – makes us look twice to reassure ourselves that the stamp is from South Africa and not one of the French Colonies. We find it difficult to understand how such monstrosities could receive the blessings of those in authority.”
